A Note From the Writer:

The first question people ask me when I tell them about the show is “why Phar Lap?” My instinctual answer is “He’s our greatest horse.” but that’s only the surface level answer. Phar Lap represents now what he represented back when he was alive. Hope. Camaraderie. Our country’s obsession with sport. He rose to greatness, not just because he was an excellent racehorse, but because he was a symbol for a brighter future for working class Australians during a terrible time period. The parallels between the 1920s/30s and now are closer than is comfortable, and it feels to me that we’re starved for hope. So, I looked back. Why not let Phar Lap guide us through these tough times as well?

Synopsis

The Wonder Horse! Spans the short yet culturally significant life and afterlife of Phar Lap, Australia’s favourite racehorse. A semi historical, semi fantastical musical featuring a horse puppet the size of a large dog.

It's 1924 and the world is on the cusp of a global depression. Young strapper Tommy Woodcock is tasked with whipping a disgustingly ugly and awkward horse into shape so he can become a champion and save his investors from financial ruin. This ultimate underdog is Phar Lap, soon to be Australia's hero. Throughout his meteoric rise, we see Tommy and Phar Lap's love and friendship grow stronger and stronger, until they ultimately become the dynamic duo the history books know and love. However, when Phar Lap suffers a great tragedy, Tommy is left a wreck...

Flash forward 100 years to the modern day where young scientist Joan Malone is working on an experiment that hopes to save the Boggomoss Snail (a critically endangered species native to Queensland.) But what does that have to do with Phar Lap?
